Aloha Tiger Sharks –
I know you’re super bummed that this is your last virtual Friday, so we’re going to take it easy on you this week. Not sure if you caught the headlines, but our state of Hawaii is the first in the USA to legally ban the practice of shark finning. Please take your time and read through this news article . . .

For your LAST science assignment, please write a brief, 2 paragraph essay that includes . . .
Paragraph 1: A summary of the main ideas in the article. Describe the positions/arguments both for and against shark finning.
Paragraph 2: What is your position? Should shark finning be banned because the practice is driving ancient shark species into extinction or should this culturally important tradition be allowed to continue?
Please title your essay: firstname_lastname_sharkfinning.doc and send to:

Aloha gang,
As the end of your freshman year rapidly approaches, you need to begin scheduling and preparing for your Student-lead conference with your parent(s)/guardian and your beloved advisor (that would be me).
Next week, the week of May 17, we will call each of your parents to set up a date and time. Conferences can begin the week of May 24, and may be scheduled no later than Wed Jun 9. Conferences scheduled during the last week of May and the first week of June must be after 3:00pm. Conferences scheduled during Jun 7-9 may be scheduled between 8am - 5pm. Conferences will last no more than 1 hour. Conferences will constitute the majority of your 4th quarter advisory grade.
Your student –lead conference will consist of:
Part I:
- 4 examples of work from each of your core classes (science, math, language arts, social studies)
- Complete the Student Reflection Form (attached below) for each of these pieces of your work (these will serve as a guide during your presentation)
Reflection Form for Student Work
- Discuss how each of these work samples demonstrate 21st Century Skills (found here . . . )
- Identify which of these work samples represent your best work, and which sample needs the most improvement.
- Identify your strongest and weakest 21st Century Skills.
Part II:
- What are your short-term goals? In other words, what do you hope to accomplish by the end of next school year?
- What are your long-term goals? In other words, what do you hope to do after high school?
- How will you accomplish these goals – Be Specific!!!
Part III: Advisor-lead
- Setting schedule for next year – are you going to have 3 or 4 brick-and-mortar days?
- Analyzing your credit-form and grades thus far . . .
Important – Get a flash drive to take any work you want off of your z-drives! They will be erased this summer!
Have fun!!! One step at a time . . .

Aloha,
As you are completely caught up with your work, here's a chance to earn a bit of extra credit.
Check out National Public Radio's Science Friday podcast, "Restructuring Space Flight," found here . . . http://www.sciencefriday.com/program/archives/201004162
Write a short, but convincing, persuasive piece arguing whether you think Obama is wrong or right to alter the focus at NASA away from returning to the moon and toward deep space exploration. Is it a good idea to allow private companies to now be primarily relied upon for low-orbit flights instead of NASA?
